MCRHL Invades Wings Stadium for its Fourth Event of the Season

With the drop of the puck at 7am EST this morning, the teams of the MCRHL began their weekend at a new rink added to the schedule this season, Wings Stadium in Kalamazoo, Michigan.  This being the first time the MCRHL has had an event here, Western Michigan is looking to pack the house with fans and have a huge turnout.

In opening game of the weekend, we saw a DI matchup pitting Miami (OH) against Eastern Michigan.  Miami started things out quickly despite the early start and got out to an early 3-0 lead against Eastern Michigan in the first period on goals from Alex Meloy (2) and Coleman Mitchel.  Although Cory Dare netted two in the contest, it wouldn’t be enough and Miami rolled to an 8-2 victory.

Next up in a D2 matchup, we saw a fantastic matchup between the Akron Zips and the Michigan Tech Huskies.  The teams battled hard, seeing Joe Haynes for the Zips and Bill DeMeyer for the Huskies both getting two goals leading into a tie game at the end of regulation.  It would be Alec Drzemiecki for Akron who broke the tie and netted them the win.

In another great game, we saw visiting school Slippery Rock from the ECRHA taking on a Miami team having already put on a solid performance earlier in the day. The game was a hotly contested matchup with over half the game’s goals being scored in the first period with Slippery Rock getting out to a 3-1 lead before the horn sounded for the first period on goals from Dillon Scott, Chris Allison and Jonathan Gazella.  Miami was not going to go down without a fight however, and saw Kevin Putnam score two in the second to tie the game at 3. Both teams netted one more before heading to our second overtime game of the weekend.  After neither team could get one past either goaltender, it came down to a shootout where both teams scored once on each of their first shots, but in the end, it would be Miami posting their second win of the weekend on a goal from Brent Novosel to close it out.

We’re heading into the latter half of the day with another solid slate of games that should continue a weekend of strong performances.  Stay tuned for more updates as the action continues!
