Synergy Works!
by Jerry Remsbecker, Head Coach, Kansas State University Inline Hockey

Take 2 college inline hockey clubs, a new rink, and a worthy
charity. Mix them together and great things happen.
Kansas City Ice Center is a fairly new ice rink in the Kansas City area. They
have 2 rink surfaces and just put a sport court floor on one of them for the
summer. They were looking for a way to get the word out that they are in
business.
The Kansas State University Inline Hockey Club is always
looking for someone to scrimmage to improve our skills.
The Autism Society -The Heartland is a worthy Charity that
does great things for families dealing with Autism.
KCIC rink is approximately half-way between the University
of Missouri and Kansas State University. Richard Hawkins, the manager of the
inline facility at KCIC and I had spoken before and we came up with the idea of
trying to get a college level game going to help promote his rink and give my
guys a chance to have a pre-season game to see how we stack up and also see what
we need to work on before the season starts. I contacted Mizzou’s team and they
liked the idea. Through further discussion between the three groups, we decided
that this would be a good thing, but we could make it a great thing if we
helped a worthy cause. Richard suggested the Autism Society - The Heartland and
they immediately got on board.
The rink is donating the floor time and officials. The
K-State Inline Hockey Club is donating our travel expenses, as are the Mizzou
guys. The program has grown to include a Mission Hockey College for 30 of the
young players at the rink, followed by a family skate for the Autism Society - The Heartland.
The day will be capped off with the Mizzou vs. K-State game.
