The hardest thing for a hockey player is hanging up the skates. There’s a reason you see people playing junior hockey until they age out. There’s a reason there are so many semi-pro leagues around the world. We just can’t let go of the sport. When I chose not to play juniors I felt like I had given up. It wasn’t that I didn’t love hockey because I did and still do. I guess I was just ready to get drafted in the NESHL (New England Men’s League). Before I go on I feel obligated to share I was the first overall pick in the free agent draft in the 2014-2015 NESHL draft, which in reality is not a big deal.
I’m that kid who always went way too hard in gym class. The one people yelled at freshman year of college for trying too hard in intramural floor hockey. I don’t know, I like to win. It’s who I am and nobody can change that. I still remember one day during freshman year, I scored a goal in intramural floor hockey and raised my stick in celebration. A senior on the opposing team pushed me and said, “Did you just celly in floor hockey, you a**hole?” The answer was yes, yes I did just celly. I love to score goals. I love to celebrate afterwards with my teammates. It’s the one part of the game that I’ll never grow out of. It was at that moment I realized I needed to play competitive hockey again. It was less than a year since my last high school game and I already knew life without hockey was not a life for me. Men’s league is great but I can play that the rest of my life. I wasn’t ready to be fully washed up.
My solution was college roller hockey.
