Feb 9-10 Recap

The Midwest Collegiate Roller Hockey League took its’ talents to Joe Dumars Fieldhouse in Shelby Township, Mich. over the weekend. In total, 10 teams were in attendance, showcasing their abilities.

Michigan State D-1 was the only team from their division to make the trip. They went undefeated throughout the weekend, including wins against Western Michigan, Miami (Ohio), Henry Ford and Grand Valley D-2. MSU improved their record to 12-4, while outscoring their opponents 37-7.

Division 2 was busy with three of the four MCRHL teams playing in five games over the weekend. Grand Valley being one of them, went 3-1-1 and increased their lead in the division to eight points. Included in their wins was a narrow 5-4 victory over Miami on Saturday and a 4-0 shutout of Henry Ford on Sunday. Stony Brook from the Eastern Collegiate Roller Hockey Association played spoiler and beat Grand Valley in a 2-1 overtime battle. Defenseman Peter Elieff led the Lakers in scoring over the weekend with seven points (two goals, five assists).

Western Michigan is currently in second place of the division with 20 points after going 3-1 this past weekend. Wins included an 8-0 shutout of Henry Ford, a crucial 6-4 victory over Miami and an exciting 3-1 win over MSU D-4. Their loss came at the hands of MSU D-1 by the score of 5-1. Leading the way in scoring for the Broncos was Anders Elmblad with seven points (five goals, two assists).

Miami played in five games as well, going 2-3 with wins over Stony Brook, 7-5, and D-4 Grand Valley, 8-2. Their performance over the weekend pushed their overall record to 7-8. Defenseman Owen Benben kept the Redhawks in games all weekend with points in every game, totaling 15 points in five games (three goals, 12 assists).

Henry Ford was involved in four shutouts throughout the weekend, coming out on the right side of things in one of those with an 11-0 win over Akron. Their overall record now stands at 4-9-2.

Akron and Ohio State are battling it out for first place in Division 3 of the MCRHL. OSU won the head-to-head matchup 13-4, enacting revenge from a loss earlier in the season. The Buckeyes also beat D-4 Grand Valley, 4-3 and despite a 7-1 loss to MSU D-4, they improved their overall record to 4-6.

Akron would go on to lose their three games, giving them a 3-7 overall record.

Division 4 foes Michigan State and Grand Valley met in their first games of the weekend, with MSU coming out on top, 7-2. The D-4 Spartans would go 2-2 to give them a 10-5 record overall, while the Lakers struggled on their way to a 1-3 record with their lone win coming in a 13-1 affair against Akron. This drops their overall record to 5-6.

After a demanding weekend of college roller hockey, the MCRHL boasts a quick turnaround with an event in Mt. Prospect, Ill. on Feb. 16-17.
