The Shuman brothers use a power above to the lead their school

The team surprised most in pool play. Miami was tops in their pool by beating the other teams by a combined total of 24-5. Their opening round match-up against Cal was lead by Josh and Jake as they put up the first 3 of the 5 five goals the Hurricanes had to beat them 5-1. Adversity was faced throughout the bracket. Determination, hard work and ‘someone from above’ was all they needed. Scott Johnson and Adam Katz took over in the next round against East Carolina. They combined for 5 of the 7 goals that led Miami to the semis. Goaltender Paul DeSilva stood tall throughout the tournament. Posting multiple 30 save games to shut the door for their opponents. Between the semi and final games, the Hurricane opponents hit multiple posts, but it didn’t faze DeSilva. They were down at multiple points during the last two games.
Bethel University was looking to be a spoiler in the semi-final round. They were up the entire game, including a wild scoring 2nd period. Miami tied it up early in the 3rd. A late penalty looked like things were going Bethel’s way late. It was set – 2 minutes to play, Bethel with the power play, a chance to win it when… an errant pass was picked off by Jake Shuman, skated down on a breakaway and put in. Miami then kill off the last few seconds to punch a dramatic ticket to the finals.
The stage was ready; the southeast was represented well with two of their member teams in the final. Both teams didn’t disappoint with a double overtime showing of heart, desire and determination. Both teams were exhausted and refused to take a time out. They both had power play chances. Just two minutes into the second overtime Miami was on another power play. Josh Shuman, who scored all of the previous ‘Canes goals, had tons of room to walk in on this one. He fired a 15 foot snapper on goal that trickled through the goalie and the celebration was on. Miami cheered in three places including by their fans in the stands and a place at center to salute Mara Shuman watching above.
