Arizona State University is your WCRHL 2020 Division IV Champion! ASU defeated University of Arizona 3-2 in overtime in the championship game.
Arizona State dominated Division IV play all season long, boasting a 15-1 record, with their only loss coming to a team in a higher division, Cal Poly Pomona (D3). ASU had a couple other good tests as well, with a 5-4 win against Grand Canyon University (D2) and an overtime win against West Valley College at the final regular season event.
It looked to be very much the same as ASU opened up round robin play with a pair of 7-0 shutouts against CSU Fullerton and Cal Poly Gold and a 9-2 win against Arizona. Arizona State, being the top seed after round robin, would draw the #4 seed Cal Poly Gold in the semifinals. Cal Poly Gold gave ASU a much better game than they had in round robin, but still fell short by a score of 6-3. In the other semifinal it was Arizona dominating play against CSU Fullerton, defeating them by a 6-1 score.
The Division IV Championship Game was a complete 180 from the rest of the weekend and from ASU’s regular season. Arizona got on the board first, with goals from Zachary Kavanagh and on the power play by Michael Miscio. Arizona State equalized in the 2nd, scoring the only 2 2nd period goals, early, by Miguel Cazares and Cole Kamin. No scoring in the 3rd period, just one penalty to U of A that they were able to kill, sending the game to overtime. Overtime found both teams being a bit careful, but ASU getting a couple more opportunities. U of A’s goaltender, Nathan Mazur, turned aside multiple attempts before ASU’s Elliot Allison finally put one home, 8:30 into overtime, for the Division IV Championship.
Arizona State's Elliot Allison earned Division IV Most Valuable Player, with that game-winning goal! ASU’s Weston Walker stopped 19 of 21 shots in the win, and U of A’s goaltender Nathan Mazur stopped 29 of 32 shots in a valiant effort.
