Rutgers Rallies Against Temple

3 Goal Third Period Earns 4-4 Tie

Glastonbury, CT - John Mehler made 34 saves for Temple, but Rutgers rallied from down 3 goals in the third period to force a 4-4 tie on Saturday night. The first period was winding down when Rutgers finally got on board. It was a Victor Masino shot, the 12th of the period that finally found the back of the net to tie things at one. Temple regained the lead in the begining stages of the second period when Terovr Davis's centering pass hit off Rob Shero in front, suprising the Rutgers netminder for the goal. With 5:06 left in the period Temple built upon the lead. Josh Altman picked up the puck in his own zone and used his speed to gain some open space before releasing a low wrist shot. Rutgers goalie had trouble with the rebound and Davis was there to slam home the rebound for a 3-1 lead. Enjoying a man advantage, Temple added to its lead in one of the stragest plays you will ever see. After a turnover in the neutral zone, Scott Kalbfleisch crossed the blue line where he was stood up. The puck shot out of the jumble of players towards the goal and hit off the post in before anyone could react and Temple was up 4-1. Rutgers can firing back scoring two quick goals, the first by Chris McManus. Moments later, TJ Murphy broke free from coverage and came in all alone. A quick forhand-backhand deke ended with Murphy sliding the puck through the fivehole to the lead to 4-3. With 5:16 remaining in the game, Rutgers finished the three goal rally when a turnover in the offensive zone by Temple sprung a 2-on-1 the other way. Colin Bradley fed Victor Masino who laces a wrist shot to the far corner of the net to knot things at 4-4 setting up a thrilling finish. In a moment of cardiac arrest, Temple's John Mehler saved the game with just 15.4 seconds remaining. After the puck bonuced in on net, it found its way behind Mehler with two Rutgers players closing in on the puck. However, Mehler made a heads up play and froze the puck preserving a tie. Temple's season will come down to the regular season finale tommorrow morning against Suffolk. Temple must win in order to qualify for the postseason.
