Mustache leads Cougars to San Jose
GPCIHL March 16th, 2010 at 8:45PM March 17th, 2010 1:28AMAfter having one of the most versatile careers in Great Plains Collegiate Inline Hockey League history playing forward, defense, and goaltender last year and combining with Jason Walker for 113 points; Andrew Tucker took over the reigns as the coach of the Southern Illinois University Cougars roller hockey team this season. Tucker worked with a short bench most of the season having to struggle to get players to the games as there were many schedule conflicts between the Ice Hockey and Roller Hockey season. The team would go into the regional championships with a 10-7-1 record for the second straight season. Even with the conflicts the Cougars had impressive victories over SLU, Kennesaw, Illinois, Truman State and even tied the defending GPCIHL champions in Missouri State. The Cougars regular season would place the team as the five seed coming into the championships and would force the team to have a successful run at the tournament in order to make to the National Championships in San Jose. Tucker started the championships by making a decision to change the power play putting TJ Henson on the unit along with Chance Webb, Jason Walker, and Michael Dolan. The moved payed off as the Cougars power play was almost flawless during regionals carrying the team to three straight victories and a GPCIHL Championship. In the first game SIUE faced their toughest challenge of the day as the Truman State Bulldogs forced the Cougars into overtime, but were not able to get the win. With the win the team would get their third shot at Missouri S&T, which had two victories over the Cougars during the regular season. This game would be different as SIUE came out early and won the game 10-2. The victory sent the team to the championship game against the defending champions Missouri State. The game was close the entire way, but the Cougars won 4-3 holding off the Bears in the final seconds of the game. With the win SIUE got an automatic bid to the 2010 National Collegiate Roller Hockey Association Championships in San Jose, California, during the week of April 7-11. Tucker has recently been heard as contributing part of the teams success to the mustache that he has grown. Tucker said, "After looking around the GPCIHL, I noticed that all the great coaches had great mustaches, so I decided to keep up the tradition and it has really paid off." Tucker and the Cougars will be at Nationals in a few weeks to begin their run at a National Championship.
