WCRHL  December 7th, 2009 at 12:07AM
ASU outscored opponents 38-10 while going 4-0 at Rollerplex.

The ASU Sun Devils hosted all WCRHL D1 teams for an all day tournament this weekend at their home rink of Rollerplex in Peoria, AZ.

The Devils D1 team opened the tournament against UC Santa Barbara who was in 3rd place in the division at the beginning of the day. ASU would dominate UCSB from the start, jumping out to a 6-0 lead before UCSB got a few goals to end the game 6-3. Jeremy VanBuskirk had 3 goals including the game winner.

In the next game, ASU would cruise to an 11-1 win over Cal Poly SLO, led by 3 goals and 3 assists from Brian Ganz. Following that, the Sun Devils notched another dominant win: 14-2 over CSU Northridge, led by 5 goals from Derek Bolls.

In the final game of the tournament for both teams, ASU faced off against Long Beach State in a matchup of the top 2 teams in the division. The Devils showed their dominance early on, jumping out to a 6-0 lead. ASU allowed Long Beach a chance to make it a game by taking 14 penalty minutes, including 2 double-minors in the final period. They would hold on though, securing a 7-4 win.

Jeremy VanBuskirk led the team in scoring for the tournament with 16 points. Brian Ganz was right behind him with 15 while Koressel and Bolls posted 10 points each.

Heading into the semester break, the Devils have a league-best 11-1-0 record which, barring a 2nd-semester collapse, will earn them best regular season record in the WCRHL. The Rollerplex tournament was, however, the final tournament until April for starting goaltender Clay Taylor, forward Jeremy VanBuskirk, and defenseman Dan Anderson. All 3 will miss the last 2 regular season tournaments plus regionals because of conflicts with the ASU ice team schedule. All 3 will be back for nationals.

The next D1 tournament for ASU is January 23-24 in Santa Barbara, CA.
