Old Bethpage, NY - Max Stern scored two goals to lead Suffolk past Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon, preventing the Seawolves from earning their first win of the season.
It didn't take long for either offense to get on the board, Brian Price got things started and staked Suffolk to an early 1-0 lead. Max Stern extended that lead to two goals just fourty seconds later, giving Suffolk an early advantage. Steven Zawalich cut the lead in half a few minutes later, giving Stony Brook a new breath of life after a terrible start to the game. Tom D'Ancona erased the early lead for Suffolk when he tallied with 1:17 remaining in the first period to tie the game at two goals each.
After a back and forth battle in the second period, it was Suffolk who finally broke through and found the back of the net with just over three minutes remaining in the period. Eric Urso took a Ryan Riker pass and slammed the puck past a sprawled out Stony Brook goalie to regain the lead at 3-2.
It didn't take quite as long to start the scoring in the third and final period. David Chizzoniti made a nice pass to spring Max Stern on the breakaway, Stern made a shifty move, sliding the puck through the fivehole for a 4-2 lead. Tom Cotter took advantage of some sloppy defense to give Suffolk a three goal lead, scoring shorthanded with just over six minutes remaining in the game.
Steven Zawalich scored his second goal of the game to cut the Suffolk lead back to two goals, however, it was too late in the contest to rally back. Stony Brook had a few chances to cut the lead to one, however, Suffolk was up to the task and held on for a 5-3 victory.
