At the WCRHL regional championships, the Sun Devils opened up with another close loss to Cal Poly SLO. They rebounded in the next game, topping UC San Diego 6-5 to finish 2nd in pool play, setting them up for a semifinal matchup against Saddleback College.
After taking the lead on a goal by Josh Strong, the Sun Devils built up a 4-1 lead in the 1st period. Slowly, Saddleback chipped away at the lead and took a 5-4 lead into the final 2 minutes of the game. With 1:22 left in the game, Nick Bazan came out of the penalty box, recieved a breakaway pass from Luke Shaw, and buried it on the glove side to send the game to OT.
In the extra frame, ASU would once again overcome penalty troubles. Just over a minute into sudden death, Shaw came out of the box and just seconds later picked up the puck and buried it over the goalie's glove, setting off a bench-clearing dogpile as the Sun Devils moved on to the regional championship game.
In the regional final, the Devils matched up against UC Santa Barbara with the WCRHL's automatic bid to nationals on the line. Once again, the team showed the same perseverance they have shown all year long. After falling behind 3-0, the Sun Devils refocused themselves and started the comeback. First, Luke Shaw set up Brent Berger to make it 3-1. A few minutes later, Nick Bazan made it a 3-2 game on the assist from John Tarr.
Things continued to work against the Sun Devils after the games were done being played. Despite splitting the season series with Saddleback, including beating them in the regional semifinal, making it to the regional championship game, and being the only team to beat UCSB all season long, it was Saddleback and UCSB which were chosen by the selection committee to go to nationals. The Sun Devils were chosen as the 2nd alternate.
The disappointing finish to the season did not erase the great accomplishments of Arizona State in their inaugural season. From leading scorers like Nick Bazan, Tony Huynh, and Luke Shaw to vocal leaders Jimmy Woods and Brent Berger; from the important defensive play of Kyle Burt and goalie Cody Clark to hardworking forwards Chris Brown, Tim Bogdansky, John Tarr, and Josh Strong, all 11 members of the team had their personal season highlight, their big contribution. Collectively, the team had several highlights, being the only team to beat UCSB as well as their memorable overtime win against Saddleback regionals. This same group of guys won't be together again, and although their season ended too soon, it was a season to remember for every player.
