GPCIHL  January 28th, 2009 at 6:31PM  January 28th, 2009 6:38PM

Lindenwood’s academic calendar consists of a three-week session between first and second semesters.  Players must be enrolled in “J-Term” in order to participate during this session.  Some players use this time to go home and see family, but others mostly from the St. Louis area, take advantage of the session and are eligible to play during this session.  This is why the Lion’s were shorthanded this past weekend, but all three teams got the results they were looking for.

 Division 1:

The Lion’s Division 1 team started the second half just as they did the first.  The Lions defeated Mizzou (D1), University of Missouri – St. Louis (D1), and SIU – Edwardsville (D2).

Lindenwood’s toughest game of the weekend came against rival University of Missouri – St. Louis .  The first period was scoreless and evenly matched.  Both teams had two chances on the power play and neither could convert.  The score was 0-0 going into the 2nd period.  The Lions would take a penalty just 2 minutes and 7 seconds into the period.  UMSL would finally capitalize with the man advantage and take the 1-0 lead going into the 3rd and final period.  With the Tritons taking a penalty with just 1 second left in the 2nd period, Lindenwood would start the 3rd with the man advantage.  It took just 16 seconds for the lions to tie the game at 1-1 with a power play goal from Travis Fudge who got a pass from senior captain Jeff Hill.  Just 38 seconds later Mike Knabe received a pass from Michael Thiefault to give the Lions a slim 2-1 lead.  Lindenwood would keep its momentum by adding another power play goal just 39 seconds later making the score 3-1.  Fudge would get his second goal of the game with a pass from Brandon Barnette.  UMSL would then settle down and get 2 even strength goals to tie the game at 3-3.  UMSL would take a penalty with just 2 minutes and 23 seconds left in the game.  The Lions took advantage of this game changing opportunity and sealed the win with a power play goal with just 1 minute and 5 seconds left in the period.  Barnette would get a great pass from Kyle Gouge and hammer in a one-timer to give Lindenwood the 4-3 win over the Tritons.  “I knew a bounce one way or the other and the results could have been different,” Coach Beilsten said, “But I did have all the confidence that our team would give it their all in trying to get it done.”  The Lions out shot the Tritons 21-20.

The Lions top performers this past weekend were forwards Brandon Barnette (4G, 6A), Michael Thiefault (5G, 3A), and Michael Inouye (4G, 4A).

The D1 Lions will return to action January 31st and February 1st in Mt. Pleasant , Pennsylvania .  They will take on Michigan State , Rutgers, and Buffalo .  “It is a great time of the year for a test like this for us as we build toward the end of the season and Nationals,” Coach Beisten said.

B-Gold:

Lindenwood’s top B team stayed atop the B-Division standings with wins against University of Missouri – St. Louis (B), Mizzou (B), and Illinois State (B).  “The team played really well despite being short benched,” Coach Hilke said, “The players that needed to step up and play their best, did.”

Like the D1 team, the B-Gold Lions toughest game was against University of Missouri – St. Louis (B).  Gold would not waste any time getting on the board.  James Schenewerk would get a pass from Patrick Fuist to put the Lions up 1-0 just 24 seconds in.  Lindenwood would grab the 2-0 lead with an even strength goal from freshman call-up Josh Buehrig who received a pass from Fuist.  UMSL would get on the board with an even strength goal to make the score 2-1 going into the 2nd period.  The Lions were handed three power plays but were unable to convert on any of them.  The score would remain 2-1 going into the 3rd period.  The Tritons would tie the game at 2-2 with a shorthanded goal just 33 seconds into the period.  With 3 minutes and 22 seconds left in the game, Ian Mueller would snipe a pass from Brad Sweeney just under the crossbar to give Lindenwood the 4-3 victory.  “I can honestly say that we only made two major mistakes in the defensive zone and both resulted in UMSL goals,” Coach Hilke said.  Lindenwood out shot UMSL 27-14.

The B-Gold top performers this past weekend were forwards Patrick Fuist (6G, 6A), David Murphy (5G, 1A), and Ian Mueller (3G, 3A).
