Lindenwoods D1 and B-Gold Teams Stay at #1; B-Black Struggles and Drops to #3

The Lion’s Division 1 team had another perfect weekend beating University Missouri – St. Louis (D1), Missouri State (D2), and Illinois State (D2). “I was very satisfied with our effort this weekend; the tempo of our games was very consistent regardless of the score,†Coach Ron Beilsten said.
Lindenwood’s toughest game of the weekend was a battle for 1st place in the Division 1 standings against University Missouri – St. Louis. The Lions would start the scoring half way through the 1st period. Travis Fudge buried a pass from freshman Jake Hill to give the Lions a slim 1-0 lead going into the 2nd period. The 2nd period was the Lions best, scoring goals from Michael Theifault and Brandon Barnette. UMSL would take a penalty late in the period and Lindenwood would capitalize with a power play goal from Jeff Hill. UMSL would respond with a goal just 30 seconds later to make the score 4-1 going into the final period. The Lions offense was quiet in the 3rd period, as UMSL would score the only goal with 4 minutes and 15 seconds left in the game. Lindenwood’s defense would hold off the Tritons to secure the victory and 1st place in the Great Plains division 1 standings. “The team applied what we did in practice very well,†Beilsten said, “Our special teams play was great as well.†The Lions out shot the Tritons 27-19.
The Lions top performers this past weekend were forwards Sean Sullivan (6G, 2A), Brandon Barnette (2G, 4A), and goaltender Dave Thomas who saved 23 of 25 shots faced.
The D1 Lions will return to action January 24th at Matteson’s Tri-Plex in St. Peters, Missouri.
B-Gold:
Lindenwood’s top B team stayed perfect as well defeating Missouri – Rolla B, St. Louis Community College – Meramec B, Lindenwood Black B, and Truman State B. “The guys had another great weekend; hopefully we can continue our success through next semester,†Coach Hilke said.
The Lions toughest game was against their own Lindenwood Black team. Lindenwood Gold would tally the only goal of the 1st period. James Schenewerk would get a pass from Stevie Jones to put Gold up 1-0 going into the 2nd period. Gold started the scoring early in the period with goals from David Murphy and Schenewerk. Black would get on the board 4 minutes and 46 seconds left in the period to make the score 3-1. Gold would respond just 5 seconds later with a goal from Nick Hartley. Gold would then add another late in the period by Murphy to make it 5-1 going into the final period. Black would score the only goal in the period making the final score 5-2. “Both teams played well,†Coach Hilke said, “The boys really had to work hard for this one.†Gold outshot Black 28-15.
The B-Gold top performers this past weekend were David Murphy (6G, 3A), Adam Aitken (4G, 4A), and goaltender Marcus Rogers who got 4 wins with 3 shutouts. “Rogers played great for us this weekend. Timmy’s (Hegger) knee was a little sore, so we gave him the weekend off,†Coach Hilke said.
The Gold team will return to action January 24th at Matteson’s Tri-Plex in St. Peters, Missouri.
B-Black:
Lindenwood’s B-Black team went 2-2 this past weekend, recording 2 wins against St. Charles Community College B. The two losses came against Lindenwood Gold B and University Missouri – St. Louis B. “Overall the weekend was good,†Coach Jones said, “The UMSL game was really the only game where we did not play well.â€
B-Black’s toughest loss came against University Missouri – St. Louis B. UMSL started the scoring just 2:20 into the 1st period making the score 1-0. The Lions would respond 53 seconds later as Greg Hester got a pass from Alex Rodgers to tie the game at 1-1. UMSL would add another goal and make the score 2-1 going into the 2nd period. UMSL would dominate the rest of the way scoring 8 goals and outshooting the Lions 27-13. The Lions would fall to the Tritons 10-1. “We came out slow and fell short of our goal; you can’t do that against a team like that,†Coach Jones said.
The B-Black top performers this past weekend were Greg Hester (5G, 2A) and Josh Buehrig (2G, 2A). Coach Jones said, “Hester is a great asset to our team and if he keeps up his play he will help our program at the national tournament.â€
