February 9th and 10th Weekend in Review
Wild game hands Bulldogs first loss of the year.
GPCIHL February 9th, 2008 at 11:50PM February 11th, 2008 8:26PMThe Truman State Bulldogs came into their only game Saturday with a mission: to send a message to the rest of the league. A message was sent, but it was definitely not the message intended.
The Bulldogs, plagued by a slow start and some uncharacteristic poor finishing, fell to a surging SLU club by a score of 7-5. The game featured incredible swings of momentum, with SLU leading 3-0 after one, only to have the Bulldogs score four unanswered goals to take the lead 4-3 in the second. A late goal by SLU brought the second period to a close with the score 4-4.
A back and forth third was erased by the unbelievable play of Shawn O'Rourke, who tied the game on the powerplay and closed it out with two more late in the third, including one of the most spectacular individual goals you will ever see to stretch the score to 7-5.
The Bulldogs were plagued by penalties, becoming undisciplined late, and taking the last 5 penalties called in the game. SLU was able to capitalize twice on the powerplay during the game, including the game-tying goal with 3:33 to play.
The game knocked the Bulldogs out of a tie for first in GP Division 2, moving MSU into sole possession of the number 1 spot. More importantly, the game brought Truman back into the pack, making the race for nationals even more interesting, with SLU and Wash U making big statements this weekend.
More to come...
