The Missouri State Bears opened the much anticipated
season with a tough game against the Truman State Bulldogs. Truman State was one of the best teams last year in Great
Plains Division II and this year they looked just as good. Missouri State and Truman met three times last year with
Truman taking all the games. The Bears are much
improved this year though, and it showed in the game
Saturday. Returning goalie Cole Murphy started in goal
and was solid as usual. After climbing back from a two
goal deficit, the Bears tied the game at 5-5. It would
be the final score.
Kansas State was the next opponent for Missouri State. Despite being a large school, Kansas State has a hard time
fielding a competitive team. It took the Bears nearly
seven minutes to score the first goal, but they never looked
back after it. Paul McIntyre had an easy night in goal
as the Bears went on to win 10-0.
The final game of the weekend was against Southern
Illinois. The Salukis have improved greatly since last
year and the game was closer than some anticipated. While the Bears won 4-2, the score does not show how much
Missouri State dominated the tempo of the game. Freshman goalie Cory Crump got his first college start in
net and also earned his first win.
The Bears play again November 17. Their opponents
will be St. Louis University and Western Keentucky.
