Raiders Turn Focus On Keystone Conference
ECRHA January 27th, 2008 at 12:20PM January 27th, 2008 12:22PMIn the first six years of competition, the Shippensburg
University Raiders have never won a conference title, advanced past the
quarterfinals of the regional championship tournament or advanced past the
first round of the national championship tournament.
At the start of the season, the Raiders established meeting
the benchmarks as the season goals and with six games remaining in the season,
are with in striking distance of the first goal. Shippensburg currently sits in
a three way tie with #15 Slippery Rock and Temple atop of the Keystone
Conference with games in hand on both teams, including a perfect 2-0-0 record
in the conference.
Shippensburg defeated Slippery Rock 4-3 on their home floor
in Pittsburgh at the start of the season, and host the Rock in Harrisburg in
February. The Raiders defended their home floor against Temple earlier in the
season with a heart-fought 3-1 victory over the Owls.
Shippensburg has yet to match up against the Royals from
Scranton this season, but will face them in back to back weekends to finish out
the season. The Raiders took both meetings between the teams last season,
winning easily each game 10-0 and 10-4.
The Raiders are in position to take command of the
conference because of their dominating play on special teams this season. The
Raiders power play has been among the best in the league all season, converting
on 31 of 55 opportunities for an amazing 56.35%. Currently the team record
stands at 45.69%, set during the 2005-2006 season when the raiders tallied 53
times on the power play in 116 chances. The Raiders have only failed to
register a goal with the man advantage during two games this season. Against
Millersville during a 9-2 victory in which the Marauders failed to commit and
infraction and against Maine, when the Black Bears successfully killed off two
man advantages in a 9-8 win.
As good as the power play has been, the penalty kill has
been equally as effective. Shippensburg has killed 19 of 23 penalties on the
season for an impressive 82.61%. The team record currently stands at 74.65%,
set during the 2004-2005 campaign. The raiders killed 53 out of 71 penalties
during the record setting season.
