In the opening weekend of regular season play, both Tigers squads responded extremely well to the high level of play in
Broomall,
Pennsylvania.
The Division 1 faced off against
University of
Rhode Island, last season’s runner-up at the NCRHA National Championships in
St. Louis, along with The University of Connecticut and
Nassau
Community College (DIII,
Long Island,
N.Y.). In a last second finale, the Rams of Rhode Island escaped with a 6-5 victory over the Tigers in a very tightly played game. The Tigers bounced back from the early season thriller with two convincing wins against UConn and
Nassau, tallying 9 goals against each club, respectively. Forward Joe OBrien (
Bellmore,
NY) netted a career high 5 goals as he led the Tigers past the Nassau Lions, while goaltender Matt Vensel (
Butler,
PA) looked sharp in net for the Tigers all weekend.
The Towson Tigers B team also finished the weekend at a 2-1 mark. With early victories against Stony Brook and
West Chester, the Tigers flirted with perfection but were handed their first loss by the Drexel Dragons. Forward line mates Anthony Vertullo (
Suffern,
NY) and Mike Linker (
Reisterstown,
MD) quenched much of the offensive thirst for the Tigers. Defensemen Cory Greenberg (
Merrick,
NY) and Mike Johnson (Marlton, NJ) provided the additional scoring touch for the Tigers, while making their defensive presences known alongside goaltender Mike Burke (
Massapequa,
NY).
The Tigers displayed glimpses of mid-season form and once again find themselves kicking off another year with a solid start. The two squads will follow up their opening weekend in
Lemoyne,
PA on November 3rd.
