A Season Of Firsts

ECRHA  May 8th, 2006 at 5:00AM  May 9th, 2006 6:07PM

At the end of a season where a team goes 22-11-1 in overall play.  Is a two-time ECRHA runner-up. Advanced as far the quarterfinals in the NCRHA National Tournament and had the best season in the club?s short history, what do you call that team?  That is an easy answer.  The 2005 ? 2006 Towson Roller Hockey ?B? Team.

Before we take a look back on this monumental season the Tigers had, lets first look back at Nationals.  Entering this year?s NCRHA National Tournament, the young Towson ?B? team had yet to win a game at the national level.  Seeing Colorado State Rams in the tournament?s first game, Towson knew it had an opportunity to pounce on their first win at Nationals.  At the end of the thirty-six minutes, Towson had won 10 ? 3 and gave some major confidence that they had the ability to not only play, but also win at the national level. After dropping their next two games to a tough Western Michigan team and skillful Meramec Green squad, the Tigers entered the elimination round.  With a loss sending them packing, Towson squared off the University of Florida Gators.  After three periods both teams were gridlocked by a score of 4 ? 4.  Heading into overtime the Tigers had something to prove that wanted to show they belonged with the best.  With both teams battered and broken down, Towson finally struck, ending one of the most exciting games in the club?s season.  After the short celebration on the rink, Towson learned they would be facing two time defending ?B? league champions, Lindenwood Lions.  While Towson came out and gave it all the team had, they lost to the eventual champions of this year?s NCRHA ?B? Division.  While the Tigers did not win a National Championship, let us look back at a season full of accomplishments.

Entering the season, Towson Roller Hockey team officials had no idea what to expect from the ?B? team this year.  There were even whispers that the ?B? would fold.  Those rumors were squashed when a record number of new comers showed up at the season?s start.  Nine new comers to the team injected some youthful energy to a club filled with senior talent.  While early in the season the ?B? team showed rookie mistakes but hit their respective stride in Fredericksburg, VA winning all four games they played, a first in Towson ?B? history. As the season progressed the Tigers showed major signs of maturity and development emulating the Towson Division One?s style.  In the end, while the Towson Tiger?s ?B? team captured no championships, the bricks have been laid to make a very strong foundation for next year?s squad. This year alone the Tigers had more wins than any other year (22 wins), advanced farther national than any other year (7th place national), and finally was ranked national hiring than any other year (5th in the nation earlier in the year) Though losing both goalies hurts, Towson looks to reload and be a major force in both of the ECRHA and NCRHA for the 2006 ? 2007 season.
